When intellectual communities lose their authenticity

Our book club started five years ago to explore big philosophical questions together, but lately it feels like we're all performing our 'smart person' identities instead of actually wrestling with ideas that matter. Half of us seem afraid to say anything that might be wrong or offensive, and the other half have gotten cynical about the whole project, and I miss the genuine curiosity we used to bring to these conversations.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Shared pursuit of wisdom can calcify into performance when group members prioritize appearing thoughtful over genuine intellectual vulnerability.
