When longtime friend groups outgrow each other but can't let go

Our friend group from high school still gets together regularly but over the years some of us have become really different people and there's this unspoken tension about politics and values that we all just pretend isn't there. Last weekend someone made a comment that really bothered me and I realized I don't know if we're actually friends anymore or just people who used to be friends.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Shared history is competing with current reality, and no one wants to name that people can evolve in ways that make connection harder.
