When community groups avoid addressing real local conflicts

Our neighborhood book club started as a way to build community after the pandemic but it's become this weird space where we avoid talking about anything real that's happening locally — the school budget crisis, the housing development, the racial tension after that incident last month. We all show up and discuss novels while our actual shared life goes unaddressed.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

A group created for connection is actively avoiding the very connections that would make it meaningful.
