When social groups become divided by politics

Our neighborhood book club started as just a fun thing to do but over the past year it's become this intense political battleground and some people have stopped coming and the rest of us don't know whether to address it directly or just pretend everything is fine. We all still like each other as people but we can't seem to discuss anything anymore without it getting heated.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

People who came together around shared joy are discovering that avoiding conflict can kill connection just as surely as engaging it badly.
