When family members choose different expressions of inherited Sufi tradition

My brother and I inherited our family's connection to a Sufi lineage through our grandfather, but he wants to formalize it by taking bay'ah with the current shaykh while I feel called to a more independent mystical practice. We're both afraid that choosing different paths will break the spiritual thread that has connected our family for generations, but we also can't force ourselves into forms that don't fit.

More people experience this than they realize.

What we've seen

Lineage carries both gift and burden, requiring each generation to find authentic relationship with inherited spiritual forms while honoring ancestral connection.
