When study partners have different approaches to Jewish mysticism and traditional learning

My study partner and I have been learning Talmud together for three years, but lately he's become obsessed with Kabbalistic interpretations of every text we read and I feel like we're losing the grounding in traditional scholarship that drew us together. Every session turns into him seeing hidden meanings and divine sparks everywhere while I'm trying to understand the actual legal reasoning, and we're not really learning together anymore.
