How can I contribute to community without losing myself in service?
Rabia al-Adawiyya loved fiercely but didn't disappear into that love. She knew the difference between devotion and self-abandonment. Real contribution comes from fullness, not depletion. If you're giving to community from an empty well, you're performing generosity, not practicing it. Start here: notice the difference between giving because it fills something true in you, and giving because you're afraid of being rejected if you don't. One is sustainable. One burns you out and builds resentment disguised as sacrifice. Ask yourself: Am I needed, or do I need to be needed? Those feel similar in the moment, but they're opposite. The first builds healthy interdependence. The second creates dependence dressed up as intimacy. Real community needs your actual gifts—not your labor as penance for belonging. If you're a good listener, listen. If you're a builder, build. If you're a healer, heal. But also: rest. Also: receive. Also: have needs that others meet. That's not selfish. That's what makes community actually work. When everyone only gives or only takes, the circle breaks. Your willingness to be vulnerable, to need, to let others matter to you—that's as important as anything you offer.
