Why do I feel lonely even though I have friends and a community around me?
Rabia lived in deep solitude even in community. She knew something crucial: belonging isn't the same as being known. You can be surrounded and still feel unseen. Aristotle's framework helps here. A leisure friendship—someone you have fun with—doesn't necessarily know your doubts. A utility friendship—your colleague—doesn't know your values. You might have many friendships and still have zero places where you're actually known. That gap creates a particular kind of loneliness. The other piece: sometimes loneliness comes from giving without reciprocity. Rabia loved with such purity that she released the need for return—but that's her teaching, not her prescription for you. If you're the one always reaching out, always adjusting, always smaller... that's exhausting loneliness, not spiritual solitude. Check both things: Do you have at least one friendship where you can be truly yourself, struggles included? And are your friendships mutual, or are you carrying most of them? Loneliness in community often means you need to be more honest about who you are, or you need to find (or build) a space where honesty is safe. Start with one person. One real conversation. See what happens.
