Sacred Doubt and Productive Questioning

Though deeply Catholic, Sor Juana questioned Church doctrine, institutional authority, and received wisdom with philosophical precision. She modeled a form of doubt that honored tradition while refusing to calcify it. This concept—sacred doubt—distinguishes between corrosive skepticism and generative questioning. Sacred doubt emerges from love of truth and tradition, not contempt for them. It asks hard questions precisely because the stakes matter. For authenticity across traditions, this framework permits you to honor multiple lineages while holding them accountable to their own highest principles and to each other's insights. It protects against both fundamentalism (refusing to question) and cynicism (dismissing all frameworks).
