The Solidarity of the Dispossessed Intellectual

Though isolated by circumstance, Sor Juana's writing engaged with other women facing erasure, other intellectuals punished for independence, other subjects challenging power. Her authenticity was not solitary self-discovery but a practice of solidarity with others similarly dispossessed of voice and recognition. This concept rejects the existentialist stereotype of the lonely individual forging authentic selfhood in isolation. Bad faith often works by isolating: convincing you that your oppression is personal and individual, that others accept their roles willingly, that resistance is futile and lonely. Authenticity becomes richer and more sustainable when connected to others engaged in similar refusal. Sor Juana's letters, poems, and arguments addressed readers across time and circumstance—creating what we might call an imagined community of authentic resistance. In contemporary practice, this means seeking out others who question assigned roles, sharing frameworks for resistance, recognizing that your struggle is not unique. Intellectual communities, activist networks, reading groups, mentorship—these are not luxuries but essential infrastructure for sustained authenticity. When you can name your experience alongside others', when you know you're not alone in refusing, authenticity becomes possible and bearable in ways it cannot be in isolation.
