Devotion Beyond Hope

Mirabai loved Krishna knowing he would not answer her prayers in the way she wished. Her devotion persisted not because she believed in a happy ending but because the practice itself was sacred. This is crucial for anticipatory grief: we need a framework for commitment and love that does not depend on winning or saving civilization. Devotion beyond hope means continuing to act for justice, tend the earth, protect the vulnerable, and create beauty not because we believe these efforts will succeed in preventing collapse, but because they are right and they are ours to do. This is not resignation but a mature spiritual stance that separates meaning-making from outcome-dependency. Mirabai teaches that the deepest satisfaction comes from alignment with what we love, regardless of whether history vindicates us. This frees us to work and grieve simultaneously.
