Devotion Beyond Outcome: The Work of Showing Up

Mirabai sang to Krishna knowing she would not receive conventional answers, recognition, or proof of divine presence. Yet she showed up, sang, worshipped, and remained devoted. Devotion beyond outcome means committing to what matters—healing relationships, tending land, creating beauty, speaking truth—not because we are guaranteed success but because these acts have inherent value and because we love what we are tending. In anticipatory grief for civilization, this is radical freedom: we can work toward different futures not because we know we will win, but because the work itself is sacred. We can teach children, plant gardens, organize communities, create art, and grieve losses without the requirement that these actions reverse civilizational decline. Devotion beyond outcome is the antidote to both despair and narcissistic activism. It permits us to be useful, present, and whole without demanding that history confirm our importance. It is Mirabai's greatest gift: the discovery that showing up, loving, and witnessing is enough—not because it changes everything, but because it changes us, and changes are what remain ours to make.
