Embodied Devotion and Physical Boundaries

Recognition that spiritual love is inseparable from the body, and boundaries include honoring your physical presence and autonomy.

Mira
Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotion was not abstract—it was danced, sung, physically enacted. She inhabited her body fully, without shame. Yet this embodied spirituality is often used to justify boundary violations: the guru who claims spiritual intimacy justifies sexual boundary-crossing; the partner who spiritualizes enmeshment claims it as sacred union. This concept holds both truths: your body is sacred and your spiritual path is lived through it, AND your physical autonomy is inviolable. A boundary informed by Mirabai's example means you can be deeply present, sensual, and devoted without surrendering bodily consent or autonomy. The examined heart asks: Do I feel safe in this body with this person? Am I honoring both my spiritual openness and my physical boundaries? Can I give myself fully while still maintaining sovereignty over my own form?
