Freedom Through Radical Grief

Understanding grief over public figures as a gateway to freedom from illusion and inherited limitations.

Why It Matters

Mirabai abandoned her royal marriage and social duty to pursue devotion—her grief over separation from the divine became her liberation. When we grieve a public figure, we're often mourning a vision of what freedom or justice or beauty could be. This grief, fully felt, breaks our complicity with systems that enabled the loss. Radical grief asks: What must I surrender? What false comfort must I relinquish? The death of public figures can shatter our illusions about progress, safety, or human goodness. Rather than resisting this disillusionment, bhakti teaches us to let it free us from delusion. Grief becomes the furnace where our examined hearts are purified, leaving us more awake and more committed to actual change.
