Mirabai embodied profound contradiction: she was a princess, yet devoted to renunciation; married, yet devoted to Krishna; saint, yet sensual. Rather than resolving these into coherent narrative, she lived them simultaneously, with integrity to her deepest truth. This concept applies to attachment by addressing the splitting that insecure patterns create: the anxious attachment that oscillates between idealizing and devaluing the partner; the avoidant attachment that splits intimacy and independence. Mirabai's model suggests that authenticity requires holding complexity without resolution. Humans are contradictory. Partners will disappoint and delight. Relationships contain both intimacy and distance. Rather than demanding that relationship resolve all contradiction into harmony, Mirabai's path honors contradiction as the texture of genuine attachment. Her integrity didn't come from becoming perfectly consistent but from remaining faithful to her deepest recognition across all circumstances. In modern terms, secure attachment means tolerating ambivalence: loving someone while also being frustrated with them, needing independence while also needing closeness, recognizing their flaws while honoring their essence. Mirabai didn't wait for perfect circumstances or perfect love objects; she maintained devotion across contradiction, which allowed her to see truly. Partners chosen from this stance are seen fully, with all complexity, rather than split into good-object or bad-object categories.
