Why It Matters

Prarabdha karma is the specific portion of accumulated past actions (karma) that is currently fructifying in this lifetime—the seeds that have sprouted and are now bearing fruit as lived experience. In the context of parts work, prarabdha karma illuminates why certain protective parts exist: they developed in response to past experiences, relational patterns, and ancestral or familial conditioning that continues to activate in the present. These are the "dormant seeds" of past patterns now germinating as defensive strategies. A part that learned betrayal betrays before being betrayed; a part shaped by parental criticism becomes hyper-vigilant perfectionist. Understanding prarabdha karma removes shame from parts work: parts aren't malfunctioning—they're responding intelligently to the karmic patterns they inherited or experienced. Patanjali's framework suggests that while we can't change past karma, we can change how we respond to it through conscious awareness. By recognizing prarabdha karma operating through our parts, we shift from blame to compassion. Parts can begin releasing their exhausting vigilance once we acknowledge they developed for excellent reasons. This reframes healing: not fixing broken parts, but consciously working with karma manifesting through them.
