Samadhi is the state of integrated, unobstructed consciousness where all parts function in harmony; this is the implicit goal of Parts work and IFS healing.
Samadhi, often called enlightenment or absorption, is Patanjali's vision of consciousness functioning without obstruction—a state of unified awareness where all distinctions between observer and observed dissolve into seamless functioning. In Internal Family Systems, samadhi is analogous to the goal of full healing: a system where all parts trust Self-leadership, protective parts release their hypervigilance, exiles are unburdened, and the entire internal family functions with coherence and joy. In this state, parts are no longer in conflict but rather supportive—managers ease into appropriate responsibility, firefighters need not activate, exiles are safe. The path to samadhi, according to Patanjali, involves progressive refinement of consciousness through practice. Similarly, IFS healing unfolds in layers: first establishing Self-leadership, then parts building trust, then unburdening, finally achieving a fluid internal culture where each part's gifts are available. Samadhi is not a permanent escape from difficulty but a sustainable harmony where the system responds wisely to life's challenges.
