Patanjali's core teaching on asana—sthira sukham asanam (the posture should be steady and comfortable)—offers a perfect principle for healthy personality expression. Sthira is stability, strength, and grounded presence; sukha is ease, comfort, and adaptability. Personality traits need both. A Type 1's perfectionism requires sthira (consistency) but must balance with sukha (self-compassion); an ISFP's flexibility needs sukha but also sthira (follow-through); high Conscientiousness requires sthira but becomes pathological without sukha's ease. Many personality disorders emerge from imbalance: rigidity without flexibility, or fluidity without groundedness. This principle applies across all frameworks. The goal is not to change types but to cultivate sthira-sukha expression—steady yet relaxed, firm yet compassionate, principled yet flexible. This creates psychological health and maturity within any type. Practitioners learn their type's natural imbalance (Thinking types often lack sukha; Feeling types often lack sthira) and consciously develop the missing dimension. This transforms personality from a rigid template into a dynamic, resilient vehicle for authentic selfhood.
