Vairagya—dispassionate non-attachment—teaches releasing grip on desired emotional states while remaining committed to practice. In DBT for emotional dysregulation, vairagya transforms the exhausting pursuit of happiness or absence of pain into dialectical acceptance. Many dysregulated clients unconsciously demand that emotions conform to preferences, creating secondary suffering through resistance. Patanjali's framework permits practitioners to feel intense emotions while simultaneously reducing the narrative struggle against them. This parallels DBT's radical acceptance and mindfulness of current emotion modules. Vairagya does not mean indifference; rather, it cultivates purposeful action regardless of emotional weather. When practicing distress tolerance, clients need this psychological detachment—the ability to endure difficult emotions without needing them to change. By developing vairagya, practitioners reduce the emotional dysregulation paradoxically fueled by desperate attempts to eliminate dysregulation, creating freedom within emotional experience rather than through emotional control.
