Divine Love Beyond Merit

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love of the Divine should flow without condition or calculation of merit. This concept directly challenges favoritism's root: the belief that some deserve more affection, resources, or belonging than others based on status, kinship, or utility. When we practice favoritism, we fragment community and contradict the unconditional love Rabia modeled. Her tradition asks us to examine: whom do we privilege, and what does that reveal about our spiritual development? Favoritism costs us authenticity, erodes trust across groups, and prevents the unified belonging that pure devotion creates. By recognizing that love transcends merit, we begin dismantling the hierarchies that make favoritism possible and destructive.
