Love Without Ownership

The practice of offering complete devotion to a child while releasing the need to possess or control their future.

Rabia
Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught love of God without desire for reward or fear of punishment—love for its own sake. In foster parenting, this translates to caring for a child with full presence and commitment while accepting that the relationship may be temporary or that the child belongs ultimately to their own path. This concept dissolves the tension between attachment and impermanence, allowing foster parents to give generously without grasping. It transforms the foster parent's role from savior into vessel, creating space for the child to be fully seen and valued, not as an object to be possessed but as a soul to be honored. This love becomes the greatest legacy a foster child can receive: proof that they are worthy of pure devotion.
