Systemic Consciousness: Seeing Wealth Extraction

Zera Yacob emphasized the importance of consciousness—conscious reflection on experience, conscious questioning of received ideas, conscious alignment of belief with dignity principles. Applied to wealth concentration, this means developing systemic consciousness: the ability to perceive how extraction occurs through structures, not just obvious force. A worker earning a wage might not experience theft, yet if that wage captures only a fraction of value created, extraction is occurring systematically. A community's resources might be accessed 'legally' through investment structures that concentrate returns while externalizing costs. Innovation might occur through human collaboration but be captured as private property. Systemic consciousness makes visible this structural extraction that operates without anyone necessarily acting maliciously. This consciousness is crucial because wealth concentration perpetuates partly through invisibility—the mechanisms by which value flows upward are obscured by complexity, legality, and normalization. Developing systemic consciousness means learning to see: the composition of corporate boards and what it reflects, the paths of resource extraction and accumulation, the invisibility of those doing essential work while others accumulate from it. This practice of conscious seeing transforms passive acceptance of 'how things are' into active recognition of how things are arranged—and arranged things can be rearranged in service of dignity.
