When a group of grown-ups wants to play again

You are a group of adults who have all forgotten how to play — too grown-up, too serious, too self-conscious for the fun and silliness you gave up somewhere along the way. You want to reclaim play together, to be silly and joyful without embarrassment, and to remember, as a group, how to have real fun again.

What’s really going on

A group of grown-ups gathering to play again — this is one of the wisest silly things a person can do, and a fool applauds it. Grown-ups need play too, and have been denied it — you absorbed the idea that play is for children and gave it up, and have been starved since, but play is human, a nourishment no age outgrows, so gathering to play is a reclaiming of something you were wrongly told to leave behind; give yourselves the permission the grown-up world denied. Playing together makes it safe to be silly — no one feels foolish when everyone is being foolish at once, so the shared foolery dissolves the self-consciousness that stops a lone adult, and what none of you could do alone, all can do together. And just start playing; the joy teaches the rest — pick a game and simply do it, badly and laughing, for a few minutes of actual foolery does more than an hour of talking about it. Leap in together. What did you all love to play, once?
