How do I actually trust my check on AI's work now?

You use the tool to save time. Then it hands you something wrong, dressed in the same confident tone as everything else it writes. You caught it once. Now every answer looks suspicious, and every answer also looks fine, and you cannot tell which is which. That is the real injury — not the error itself, but the loss of a standard for checking. You want a trick that makes verification effortless. There is none. The tool will sound equally sure whether it is right or wrong. Stop trying to detect its confidence — you cannot. Your actual job is simpler and harder: check the claim against something outside the tool. A source. A number you can add up yourself. A person who knows more than you do. This is within your power, starting now. Not a new mindset. One small habit, run on every output you plan to use — not just the ones that feel risky.

The person needs a few clear facts about what fails and why, but the real work is building a verification habit they will actually run — that is coaching, not teaching.

What’s really going on

You were not fooled by the machine. You were fooled by your own haste — you let its confidence stand in for proof. The fix is not a smarter tool, it is a slower you. Build one short check you run on every output, every time, before trust is asked for, not after doubt sets in.

A moveBefore using any AI draft, list every checkable claim in it — names, numbers, dates, quotes — and verify each one outside the tool.
A moveAsk the tool for its sources, then read the source yourself. Do not accept its summary of the source as the source.
A moveFor anything you will put your name on, find one independent check — a second source, a colleague, or a calculation done by hand.
A moveKeep a running list of the specific errors you've caught. Read it before you start your next big task.
A moveWhen you catch a new error, write down exactly what you missed and why — not just that you missed it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A short checklist you run on every AI output, not only the ones that feel risky
  • A clear sense of which kinds of claims need verification and which do not
  • Less time spent on vague unease, more time on targeted checks
  • Trust rebuilt in your own process, not in the tool's confident tone
