How do I catch AI's mistakes when I can't always tell they're wrong?

You use the tool because it is fast. Then one day you catch it saying something false, stated with total confidence. Now you wonder how many other times it was wrong and you never noticed. This will keep happening. No amount of being careful "this one time" fixes it, because the tool will keep producing convincing errors tomorrow and the day after. You cannot catch every one. That was never in your power. What is in your power is building a habit: decide in advance what you check, every time, before you act. Stop asking whether you can trust the tool completely. You cannot, and chasing that is wasted effort. Ask instead what parts of this output matter enough to verify, and verify only those. That is a task you can finish today.

The reader already knows AI makes mistakes; what they lack is a repeatable habit for catching them, so coaching carries more weight than teaching.

What’s really going on

You will not always tell. Stop chasing certainty and build a habit instead. Before you act on anything the tool gives you, check the one part that would hurt you most if false. The tool is not the danger. Trusting it without checking is the danger — and that part is yours to control.

A moveBefore you send or submit anything the tool produced, name the single fact that would hurt you most if it were wrong — then check that fact yourself, by hand.
A moveWrite a short checklist for the one or two AI tasks you repeat most at work. Use the same checklist every time, without exception.
A moveWhen the tool gives you a number, a name, or a quote, ask where it came from. Open the source. If there is no source, treat the claim as unverified.
A moveKeep a running list of every mistake you catch. Read it once a week. Patterns in your list tell you where the tool fails you most.
A moveSort your tasks by stakes before you start. Low-stakes drafts do not need the same scrutiny as anything with your name, a client's money, or a decision attached.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop treating every AI output as either fully trusted or fully suspect, and start checking what actually matters.
  • You catch errors before a boss, client, or colleague does.
  • You know, task by task, which outputs need a second look and which don't.
  • You build a reputation for being the person whose work holds up, because you checked it — not because the tool was perfect.
