How do I correct officers who were my partners last week?

You wanted this rank. Now it costs you something — the ease you had with people who were your equals a week ago. Do not pretend this is unfair. You knew what the rank meant when you took it. The mistake is thinking the friendship and the duty are the same thing and must be protected together. They are not. Off duty, be their friend. On duty, you correct what is wrong. A man who cannot separate these two will fail at both. What you feel — the wish to be liked, the fear of the cold look after — is not new information. Every sergeant before you felt it. It changes nothing about what the post requires. Choose the correction. Let the feeling pass through you unattended.

What’s really going on

The stripes are real. Your friends are not exempt from the job, and neither are you. Correct the error the moment you see it, in private, in plain words about the task — not the friendship. Stop waiting for it to feel comfortable. It will not. Do it anyway.

A moveCorrect the mistake the same day, not later when it has grown teeth.
A moveTake the person aside — never correct a friend in front of the others.
A moveSpeak only of the task: what was done, what should be done. Leave the friendship out of the sentence.
A moveDo not apologize for having rank. An apology for the truth weakens the truth.
A moveAfter duty, let the friendship be exactly what it was. Do not carry the rank home with you.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You correct errors without dread building up beforehand.
  • Your former partners see you as fair, even when it stings.
  • The friendship survives because you stopped asking the job to be gentle.
  • You stop rehearsing conversations in your head and simply have them.
