How Do I Explain the Gap on My Resume?

Here is what is actually happening. There is a block of time with no job title next to it. That is all it is. You have turned it into a verdict on your worth, and you rehearse the interview in your head a hundred times before it happens once. Notice what you are doing: you are suffering the conversation twice. Once now, in fear, and once later, in fact. The second one you cannot avoid. The first one is entirely your own doing, and you can stop it today. You did not choose every circumstance that made that gap. You do choose the sentence you build about it, and whether you say it standing up or apologizing on your knees.

There's a small amount to learn about framing gaps well, but the real work is rehearsing the explanation until fear loses its grip — that's coaching territory.

What’s really going on

The gap is a fact. Your dread is a choice you are making right now. Decide the one true sentence that explains the time, say it plainly, and stop auditioning for their approval. You control the account you give — not their reaction to it.

A moveWrite the gap's explanation in one sentence, under 20 words. No apology, no excessive detail.
A moveSay that sentence out loud ten times today, to your pod or to a mirror, until it sounds ordinary.
A moveWith your pod, each person states their own gap sentence and the group flags any word that sounds like begging forgiveness.
A moveAsk your pod to fire the question at you unannounced, twice, so the moment loses its power to surprise you.
A moveName, out loud, what you actually did with that time — even if it was rest, care, or survival. Do not let silence write a worse story than the truth.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A single, steady sentence you can say without flinching
  • Less time spent rehearsing fear, more time spent preparing fact
  • A pod that has heard your story once and will not react to it a second time
  • The question itself starts to feel small, because you have already answered it to people who matter more than this interviewer
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
