How do we become finance partners the business actually acts on?

You say you want to be a true finance partner. Look at what your team actually does most days: build the deck, check the numbers twice, wait to be asked. That is not partnership. That is reporting with better formatting. The business does not ignore you because it fails to see your value. It ignores you because most of what you send has no decision attached to it. A table of numbers asks nothing of anyone. No one acts on a number. They act on a choice. Your team can fix this, but not by complaining about being treated as "just finance." Fix it by choosing, each week, one number worth a decision — and saying so out loud, in the room, before anyone asks you to.

The team already knows the numbers; what they lack is the practiced habit of turning analysis into a forced choice, which is trained through repetition, not instruction.

What’s really going on

You do not earn this title by asking for a seat at the table. You earn it by bringing something worth hearing. Choose one number this quarter that could change a real decision. Say it plainly. Say what to do about it. Do this three times before you call yourselves partners.

A moveBefore any meeting, ask each other: what decision does this analysis force, and who makes it?
A moveWalk into the room with a recommendation attached to every number, never a number alone.
A movePick one insight each week that nobody asked for, and say it anyway.
A moveTrack, as a team, which of your insights got acted on — not just read or praised.
A moveGet in front of the decision-makers while the numbers are still forming, not after they're final.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your analysis gets acted on instead of filed away.
  • Leaders start asking for your view before they decide, not after.
  • Your meetings shift from 'here are the numbers' to 'here is what we do.'
  • Your team stops mistaking being heard for being right.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
