How do we build models our whole team can trust and defend?

You did not build this model to admire it. You built it to answer a real question, under real pressure, in front of people who will push back. If it only works when you explain it, it does not work. Working with others makes this harder to fake. A teammate opens your file and cannot find where a number comes from. You open theirs and hit the same wall. Everyone nods in the meeting, and no one has actually checked the logic. The fix is not more polish. It is less hiding. Name your drivers. Separate the assumption from the formula. Let someone else break it before a client does. That is the whole discipline.

Driver-based structure is a teachable technique, but making a team actually practice exposure and challenge is a behavior only coaching moves fix.

What’s really going on

A model holds up when every driver is named and every teammate can trace a number back to its source without you in the room. Stop polishing the output. Choose to expose the logic instead. A model no one else can question is not rigor — it is hiding.

A moveWrite the one question the model must answer, before you build a single formula.
A movePut every assumption in one visible tab — no assumption buried inside a formula.
A moveHand the model to a teammate and have them trace three numbers back to source, out loud.
A moveRun a 'break it' session: the team's only job is to find where the model fails.
A moveSeparate driver from formula — one input cell per driver, changeable by anyone.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Teammates can update the model without needing you present.
  • Stakeholders trust the output because they can see the logic behind it.
  • Weak assumptions get challenged before the model reaches a client.
  • The model survives a hostile question in the room.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
