We can store the data. Why can't we model it?

You call this a skill you lack. It is not. Storing what comes in is easy. The trouble starts when you try to shape it into something useful, and you blame the model for not taking form. But a model has no shape of its own. It takes the shape of the question you ask it to answer. If your team has not agreed on that question, out loud, in plain words, no structure will hold. You will keep rebuilding the same thing and call it progress. This is not a technical gap. It is a missing conversation. Have it before anyone touches the schema again.

The core insight is simple and can be taught in a line; the real work is coaching the team through the conversation they've been avoiding.

What’s really going on

You have not failed at modeling. You have skipped the step before it. A model takes the shape of the question it must answer. Stop building structure until your team names, together, what decision this data must serve. Agree on the question first. The shape will follow.

A moveBefore the next meeting, write the one question your data must answer. Bring that, not your dashboard.
A moveAsk each teammate to write their own version of that question, alone, then compare all answers out loud.
A moveIf you disagree, stop building. Argue about the question, not about the columns.
A moveName one decision this model must support, and who makes that decision.
A moveFind one piece of structure you built before the question was settled. Remove it. Notice what you learn.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your team can state, in one sentence, what question the model must answer.
  • You stop rebuilding the same structure and start building toward a decision.
  • Arguments about the data get shorter, because the real argument already happened.
  • You can tell quickly whether a new field belongs or is just noise.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
