Knowledge + Guidance

I can run the building. Why can't I change the teaching?

You manage the building well. Budgets, schedules, the hundred small fires people bring you — handled. So it confuses you that teaching itself does not move, no matter how competent you are at everything around it. Here is the truth you may be avoiding: you have been leading teaching from outside the classroom. Memos, trainings, observation forms filed away — these touch the edges of the work, not the work. Teaching changes when someone who knows what to look for walks in, watches closely, and says something specific. That is inside-the-work leadership. You have not yet made it a habit. You are not alone in this building. Your team feels the same gap. The fix is not one hero principal doing better observations. It is you and your leaders building, together, a simple way of getting into classrooms that you repeat until it is just how you work.

The person already knows the goal is better teaching; what's missing is a repeatable way in, so most of the value is in coached action, not new theory.

What’s really going on

You will not change teaching from your office. Go into one room. Pick one teacher, one lesson, this week. Watch it. Say one true, specific thing about what you saw. Ask for one change. Do this again next week. That is the whole method — not a program, a habit you choose to keep.

A movePick one teacher and one lesson this week. Put it on your calendar before you read further.
A moveWatch without a form. Write one sentence describing exactly what you saw them do.
A moveSay that sentence to the teacher directly. Not a rating. A fact.
A moveAsk them to try one specific change before you watch again.
A moveBring your leadership team into the same rhythm this month, so it does not depend only on you.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You and your team have one repeatable way to get inside classrooms, not a stack of unused forms.
  • Teachers hear specific, honest observations instead of vague praise or silence.
  • You can name, in plain language, what changed in a classroom within a few weeks.
  • Instructional improvement no longer rests on you alone doing more.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
