Knowledge + Guidance

I run the shop now. Why do I miss my own hands' work?

You did the work well enough that they took you off it. That is the whole insult, and you must see it plainly before you fix anything. The promotion was not a gift; it was a transfer of your hours from steel and wood to people and schedules. Now the day fills with meetings, fires, and other people's mistakes. The precision work waits, and you tell yourself you'll get to it. You won't, not by accident. Nobody hands a shop lead free time — you take it, or you don't have it. The team is not the obstacle. Your calendar is. Decide, this week, what only your hands can do and what your people can do without you standing over them. That decision is entirely within your power. Make it.

This is mostly a daily-choice problem — defending time and handing off tasks — so guidance leads over teaching.

What’s really going on

You were not stripped of your hands. You traded bench hours for people hours, and no one warned you it would feel like loss. Stop mourning the trade. Claim a fixed block of bench time each week, defend it like a deadline, and lead the rest without apology.

A moveBlock two fixed hours a week for bench work and defend them the way you'd defend a client deadline — no meetings, no exceptions.
A movePick one job each week that only you will touch, not because your team can't, but because you must stay a craftsman, not just a scheduler.
A moveTeach one skill to one team member this month. A shop lead who trains others multiplies hands instead of just managing them.
A moveWrite down which decisions truly need you and which your team can make alone. Hand over everything on the second list by Friday.
A moveAt the end of each day, ask yourself plainly: did I make something today, or only manage what others made? Do not flatter the answer.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You reclaim real bench time on a schedule you control, not scraps left over from meetings.
  • Your team starts making decisions without waiting on you for everything.
  • You stop resenting the job and start choosing it, week by week.
  • The shop keeps running well even on the days you're not standing over it.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
