I run the firm now. When do I get to practice?
You took the top role thinking the title would protect your time for the work that mattered. It did the opposite. The title absorbed the work, and now you manage people who do what you used to do. The load is not your enemy. Plenty of people carry more and still find their hands on the real work. Your problem is smaller and more shameful: you have let management become the whole job, quietly, one urgent request at a time, and you never scheduled a place for the advocate you trained to be. No one will hand that place back to you. You must take it. This week, on your own calendar, with your own hand.
You will not find time for the work you love — you must take it, by force, on the calendar. Management expands to fill every hour you give it. Block hours for practice as you would a client meeting, and guard them the same way. What has no place on your calendar has no place in your life.
What changes unlock by starting
- You recover specific, protected hours each week for direct practice, not vague intentions to 'find time.'
- You can name, in one sentence, which work is yours to do and which is not.
- You stop mistaking the busiest hours of your day for the most important ones.
- You do at least one piece of advocacy work you can point to and say: I did that, myself, this month.
