I use a design system fine. Why can't I build one others can use?

You already know the craft. You can apply the spacing, the tokens, the variants, the rules someone else wrote. That is not the skill you lack. The skill you lack is this: writing decisions down clearly enough that people who were never in the room can trust them. Right now the system only works because you are there to explain it. That is not a system. That is you, wearing a file as a costume. This is not a tooling problem. It is a discipline. Every rule you cannot explain in one sentence, without being present, is not yet a rule — it is a preference you have not examined.

The missing piece is mostly a habit — writing reasoning down for people who are not you — not new information about design systems.

What’s really going on

Using a system means following someone else's decisions. Building one means making decisions that must survive without you in the room. Stop adding more components. Start writing down the reasons behind the ones you have. The system is not the file — it is the reasoning a stranger can follow when you are absent.

A moveFor every rule in the system, write the reason next to it. If you cannot state the reason in one sentence, delete the rule.
A moveBefore adding a component, ask your pod: what would someone build wrong without this?
A moveHand the file to a teammate who was not in the room. Watch, silently, where they get stuck. Fix that, not the parts that already work.
A moveRemove yourself from one decision this week. Let the documentation answer instead of you. If it cannot, that is your real task.
A moveOnce a month, review the system with the team and kill any rule nobody can explain without you being there.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Teammates make component decisions without messaging you first.
  • A new person uses the system correctly within a day, not a month.
  • Fewer one-off exceptions, because every rule now carries its reason.
  • The system keeps working when you are on vacation, sick, or gone.
