What am I worth now that the algos do my job?

Be honest about what happened. The desk you built a career on now runs faster without you. The skill you spent years sharpening — reading a tape, timing an entry — a model does it now, and does it without fear or fatigue. That is simply true. No use mourning it. Do not wait for someone to tell you it will come back, or that you are still needed in the old way. You are not. Wanting comfort here only delays the real question: what can you still do that the machine cannot? Here is what remains yours, and your pod's: judgment when the data runs out, the call no model will make alone, the account you give when a trade goes wrong. That is not nothing. It is, in fact, the whole job now. Decide to do it on purpose, together, instead of drifting and hoping someone notices.

The facts about what algorithms can and can't own are simple; the hard work is confronting identity and worth as a team, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

Your worth was never the trade itself. It was the judgment behind it. Machines took the task — the clicking, the speed, the pattern-spotting. They did not take the responsibility, the restraint, or the accountability when things break. Choose to build your worth there, with your team, starting now.

A moveWith your pod, list three decisions from last month a machine could not have made for you. Study what made them human.
A moveStop competing with the algorithm on speed. Choose instead where your judgment is the whole product: risk calls, client trust, the moment things break.
A moveEach week, assign one person to ask the group: what would we never let the model decide alone? Keep that list current.
A moveDecide, out loud, who answers for the machine's mistakes. Make that answer true in how you actually work.
A moveDo not wait for the firm to define your new role. Draft it yourselves this week and bring it to your manager.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop measuring yourself against a machine's speed and start measuring your judgment instead.
  • Your pod has a written, shared account of what only humans still decide, and why.
  • The vague dread shrinks into a short, real list of tasks you can actually do.
  • You can say your value in one sentence, to a manager or to yourself.
