When do I actually get to be off duty?

You run the property so no guest ever sees a crack. You've done this for years. You call it skill. It is also a habit, and habits can be examined. Somewhere in those years you stopped asking whether you needed to carry every problem yourself. Your team watched you do it, so they let you. Now none of you remembers what it looks like for you to be genuinely off duty — not performing calm for guests, but actually resting. This is not fixed by a vacation. It is fixed by handing off real authority, out loud, in front of your team, and then testing whether the place survives without your eyes on it. It will. Start today, not when things settle — they won't.

What’s really going on

You don't get to stop by waiting for things to calm down. You stop by choosing, on purpose, to hand real authority to someone else — not the easy tasks, the actual judgment calls. Pick one person. Give them one real decision. Then make yourself unreachable for a set hour and see what happens.

A moveName the one hour this week you will be unreachable, and tell your team exactly which problems they are allowed to solve without you.
A moveChoose a second-in-command today and give them one real decision — not a test, an actual one with consequences.
A moveWrite two lists: the three things that truly need your judgment, and the twenty that don't. Hand the twenty to someone else by name.
A moveLeave the property for thirty minutes with your phone off. Notice what happens. Most likely, nothing.
A moveAsk your team, out loud, what they think you don't trust them to handle. Then let them handle it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You have an actual short list of things that require your judgment — not an imagined long one
  • At least one teammate takes real ownership of a category of problem, without checking with you first
  • You get a tested block of true off-duty time, with your phone off, without the place falling apart
  • Your team sees that your absence is survivable, which changes how they plan and how they trust themselves
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
