Why do complex systems and retrofit tradeoffs still trip me up?
You can walk into most buildings now and see clearly what is wrong and what is sound. That is real skill, earned through hours of work. Do not let two remaining weak points erase what you have already built. The complex systems trip you because you have not yet spent on them the hours you spent on the simple ones. That is not a flaw in your character. It is arithmetic. Give them the hours and they will yield the same way the rest did. The retrofit tradeoffs trip you for a different reason. There, no choice is fully right — every option costs something, somewhere. You are still searching for the clean answer instead of building a way to choose between costs. That habit will not survive contact with real buildings. Choose a method, and use it, even when it feels imperfect.
You have already mastered what is simple — that is not nothing. What remains is not mastery of everything. Choose the two or three complex systems you meet most often and study those specifically. For retrofit tradeoffs, stop hunting for the right answer. There is no clean one. Build a method for weighing wrong answers against each other.
What changes unlock by starting
- You will know exactly which systems to study next, instead of feeling vaguely behind on everything.
- You will have a written method for retrofit tradeoffs you can use under time pressure.
- You will hesitate less on the systems you deliberately studied.
- You will start to see tradeoffs as choices to be made, not puzzles to be solved.
