Why do difficult teammates still throw me off?

You can work with people now. That part is done. What still trips you is not the collaboration — it is the moment someone interrupts, dismisses, or drags their feet, and something in you tightens. You call this the other person's fault. Look closer. They set the event in motion. You supplied the heat. This is not a character flaw. It is an untrained habit. You built the skill of cooperation and stopped there, as if steadiness would arrive on its own. It will not. Staying calm under friction is a separate skill, practiced separately, and most people never practice it at all. Your team feels this too. When one person's temperature spikes, the room's temperature spikes. So this is not only your work to do alone. It is work you do together, in plain sight of each other, until steadiness becomes the normal weather of the group.

The idea is simple and can be stated once; the change comes from repeated practice in real friction, so guidance carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

Because you have not decided, in advance, who controls your temperature. The teammate's behavior is not yours to command. Your reaction is. Stop waiting for friction to disappear. Choose, before the meeting starts, how you will respond when it comes — because it will come.

A moveName the exact trigger — the interruption, the delay, the tone — instead of the vague word 'difficult.'
A moveBefore your next meeting with this person, decide in advance what your response will be if they do the thing that irritates you.
A moveWhen the friction hits, pause three seconds before speaking. Ask yourself: is this within my power to fix right now, or only within my power to feel calm about?
A moveAfter the friction passes, tell one teammate what happened and how you handled your reaction — not theirs.
A moveOnce a week, as a team, name one moment of friction out loud and what each person chose to do with it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You catch the trigger before it catches you, most of the time
  • Meetings with difficult teammates stop draining the whole day
  • Your team starts naming friction openly instead of absorbing it silently
  • You judge yourself by your response, not by whether the other person behaved well
