Why do I miss solving it myself now that I lead?

You used to walk into the room and fix it. Now you watch someone else fix it, or worse, watch them struggle and say nothing. That gap feels like failure. It is not failure. It is a different job. You miss the old proof of your worth — the technical solve, the moment you were clearly the smartest person in the room. That proof is gone. You have not replaced it with anything yet. So you feel like a fraud wearing a title. Do not sit with this alone. Say it out loud to the other leads on your team, or in your pod. They feel the same gap and hide it the same way you do. Name it together. The shame drops fast when you see it is not just yours.

The problem is mostly an identity shift, not a skills gap, so coaching action matters more than teaching concepts.

What’s really going on

You are not failing at leadership. You are grieving the loss of the solve that made you feel skilled. Stop chasing that feeling. Choose a new proof of your worth: the room you built, the judgment you grew in others. That is the work now, and it is enough.

A moveSit in the next technical review and stay silent for the first ten minutes. Let your engineer struggle without you rescuing them.
A moveAfter each deal, write down what you did to make the room better — not what you personally solved.
A moveAsk your team directly: what do you need from me that isn't the answer?
A moveNotice the itch to jump in and fix it yourself. Say out loud, 'I want to take this from you.' Then don't.
A moveKeep a weekly count of coaching wins — a rep who solved it because of a question you asked, not an answer you gave.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop hijacking deals your team could close without you.
  • Your team solves harder problems on their own, because you built their judgment instead of lending them yours.
  • You feel useful again — not from the fix, but from the room you built.
  • Quota moves because ten people are sharp, not because one person is.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
