Why do my champions fall apart when I'm not in the room?
You find the right person inside the account. You coach them, hand them the pitch, watch them nod. Then you leave — and the deal stalls, or they garble the argument, or they fold at the first hard question. This is not bad luck. It is a measurement. It tells you exactly what you gave them: your words, not their understanding. A champion holding only your talking points is not armed — he is borrowed. Borrowed things break under pressure, because they were never his to begin with. The fix is not a better slide deck. It is a habit: before you ever leave the room, test whether he can make the case cold, in his own words, against a real objection. If he cannot, the work is not done. Do not call it done.
Your champion is not failing — your arming is. You gave them your words, not your reasoning. Before you leave the room, make them argue the case back to you, under objection. If they cannot do it alone, choose to finish the work now, not after the deal stalls.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can tell, before you leave the room, whether a champion is ready or just nodding.
- Fewer deals stall in your absence, because the champion owns the reasoning, not a script.
- You stop mistaking agreement in the room for ability outside it.
- Your coaching shifts from repeating the pitch to testing real understanding.
