Why do we follow this step if nobody knows what it stops?

You run the steps. You check the box. But if someone asked you what breaks when you skip it, you couldn't say. That's not carelessness. That's a gap someone else left for you. This happens on every team. A step gets written after a failure. The person who wrote it leaves, or forgets to explain it, and the step keeps going without its reason. Your pod is now performing a ritual and calling it quality control. You are not required to stay confused. The reason exists somewhere — in a person, a record, or a memory. Go find it. That is work you can do today, not someday.

A little teaching explains where checklist steps come from, but the real work is asking, tracing, and writing down the answer — so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

A checklist step exists because something broke once. You don't know what — so ask. Find whoever wrote the step, or whoever got burned before it existed, and ask them directly. Don't keep running a ritual you can't explain. The reason is available to you now. You only have to go get it.

A movePick one QC step today and ask its author or owner: 'What does this catch?'
A moveTrace that step back to the actual failure or defect it was built to prevent.
A moveWrite the answer next to the step, in plain words, so the next person doesn't inherit a blank ritual.
A moveIf you can't trace a step to any real failure, say so out loud in your next review — don't quietly keep doing it.
A moveBefore your pod's next check, ask 'what does this catch' before you ask 'did we do it.'

What changes unlock by starting

  • You know what each step is guarding against, not just that it's required.
  • Your pod catches real problems instead of performing compliance.
  • Dead or pointless steps get questioned and removed, instead of passed down forever.
  • You can train a new teammate on the why, not just the motions.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
