Why does my team get stuck on problems with no clean answer?

Your pod can research almost anything now. Facts, data, precedent — a search finds them in minutes. But put a contested career problem in front of you, and the same group stalls. More searching does not help. The problem was never missing information. Here is what is actually happening. A messy problem is not one question. It is several questions stacked on top of each other — what is true, what matters, what you are guessing at, and who gets to decide. Your group is trying to answer all four at once. That produces noise, not progress. The work is not more research. The work is taking the bundle apart before anyone tries to answer it. Do that together, and the fog clears — not because the problem got simpler, but because you stopped fighting it as one thing.

The method of splitting a problem must be taught once, but the real change comes from practicing it on your own contested problem — so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

You are not failing at research. You have proven you can find things out. What stops your team is treating a contested problem as one question, when it is really several tangled together. Choose to pull them apart: name each piece, assign an owner, and work the piece — not the whole.

A moveWrite the contested problem in one sentence, then list every smaller question hiding inside it.
A moveSort each question: is it a fact, a value, a guess, or a decision?
A moveAssign one owner to each piece — not the whole problem to the whole group.
A moveSet a date to report back on your piece alone.
A moveSave the trade-off argument for last, after the facts are settled.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your group stops circling the same argument for weeks.
  • You can name exactly which piece is still unresolved.
  • Meetings end with decisions on pieces, not stalemates on everything.
  • Everyone knows who owns what — no one waits for 'someone' to decide.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
