Why does my work feel like just paperwork now?

You know this field better than almost anyone. You also know it does not look like what you signed up for. You wanted to help build things that mattered. Most days now, you process forms that decide whether those things are allowed to exist. Be honest about what is actually happening. You are not failing at your work. The work changed shape, and no one asked you first. What you feel is not laziness or cynicism — it is grief for a version of this job that no longer exists, if it ever fully did. Grief is real, but it does not file the paperwork. The forms are in front of you today regardless of how you feel about them. The only question that matters now is what you do with the hours you actually have — not the hours you wish this job still gave you.

He already has the regulatory expertise; what he lacks is clarity on whether to re-engage, reshape, or exit — a judgment problem, not a knowledge gap.

What’s really going on

The paperwork did not corrupt your work — it became your work. You can master it, reshape your part in it, or leave it. What you cannot do is keep doing it for years while telling yourself it is beneath you. That is the choice in front of you. Make it.

A moveWrite down every decision this week where your judgment, not the checklist, determined the outcome. Count them.
A moveEach morning, do that kind of work first, before the forms, even for ten minutes.
A moveDecide, in writing, this month: do you want to change what you do, or change how you see what you do? Pick one.
A moveIf you choose to stay, stop venting about the paperwork to colleagues. It changes nothing and drains you further.
A moveIf you choose to leave, name one concrete next action — a call, an application — and set a date for it this week.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A clear decision about staying or leaving, instead of lingering resentment
  • A short daily habit that puts your judgment ahead of the paperwork
  • Less energy spent complaining, more spent on what you control
  • One dated, concrete next step instead of a vague intention
