Why does one messy dataset still wreck my whole day?

You can clean data well. That is settled. What is not settled is why the worst sources still consume your whole timeline, as if each one were the first you had ever met. Here is what you are avoiding: you have no standing way of meeting chaos. You have a method for ordinary mess, and then, for everything else, a scramble. The scramble looks like effort. It is really the absence of a decision you have refused to make. This will not be solved by becoming a better cleaner. You are already good enough. It is solved by building the one step you keep skipping — sorting a new source into a category you already understand, before you spend a single hour on it.

The fix is mostly behavioral — stop reacting, start triaging — so guidance leads, with just enough structure taught to make the triage step usable.

What’s really going on

The gnarly source is not your problem. Your reaction to it is. You meet it fresh each time, as though you had never seen chaos before, and so you improvise instead of applying what you already know. Choose to sort the mess into a known category before you touch it, and the panic ends.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveBefore cleaning a new gnarly source, write one line naming what kind of mess it is — broken structure, bad encoding, duplicate logic, missing keys.
A moveList the five damage-categories you meet most often. Stop treating every source as a stranger.
A moveGive yourself a hard 30-minute limit to categorize before you clean a single cell. If you cannot name the category in that time, that itself is information.
A moveAsk which category this is before you ask what to fix first. Order matters.
A moveAfter finishing, write one line: category, fix, time it took. This is how you build a memory instead of relying on instinct each time.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop being ambushed by messy sources because you see their shape before you touch them.
  • Your cleaning time shrinks because you apply a known fix instead of inventing one under pressure.
  • You build a personal playbook that gets sharper with each ugly source, instead of starting from zero.
  • You reclaim your timeline because triage takes minutes, not the hours panic used to cost you.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
