Why does the photo matter more than the taste now?

You learn to cook so the tongue says yes. Now a phone decides first, and the tongue answers second. That is not weakness in you — it is a real shift in who judges the plate. Grieving this is honest. Pretending it doesn't sting helps no one on your line. But grief is not a plan, and your team still has to cook tonight. So ask what is yours to choose. You cannot stop people from photographing food. You can choose, with your team, which dishes answer to taste and which you let answer to the lens — and say that choice out loud.

This problem is mostly about choosing to act differently as a team, so coaching outweighs explanation.

What’s really going on

The camera did not steal your craft; it asked a new question, and you answered before you noticed. You still choose what wins at your table. With your team, name three dishes that live or die by taste alone — then guard them, every service, without apology.

A moveBefore service, agree as a team on three dishes that must pass taste alone — write them on the specials board, not just in your head.
A moveWhen someone says 'tilt it toward the light for the shot,' ask back: 'does the bite improve, or just the picture?' Make them answer in front of the team.
A moveRun a blind tasting once a week: eat the dish with no plate shown, no photo allowed, score flavor only. Compare that score to what the photo gets online.
A moveIf you catch the team building sauce for shine instead of taste, stop the line and say it plainly — silence here is how the menu gets quietly rewritten by the camera.
A moveIf you let this slide for a season without naming it, your flavor dishes disappear one by one, and nobody remembers choosing that — they just wake up serving a menu built for screens.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Your team has a written line between camera dishes and flavor dishes — not a vague feeling.
  • You name the camera's pull out loud, instead of carrying the resentment alone.
  • At least three dishes on your menu exist because of taste, chosen on purpose.
  • Your team can taste-test blind and tell which dishes still hold up without a photo.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
