Why does working across departments wear me out so much?

You can do your own role. That is not in question. The trouble starts the moment your work depends on someone else's calendar, someone else's priorities, someone else's reply. Here is the truth you avoid: you are not tired from coordinating. You are tired from wanting other departments to move at your pace, agree with your priorities, answer on your schedule. That wish is not yours to grant. It never was. What is yours: the message you send, the ask you make, the follow-up you choose to send or not. Do that part with full attention. Release the rest — it was never under your command.

This problem is mostly solved by changing daily action, so coaching carries more weight, though the core habit of separating what you control from what you don't must be taught once, clearly.

What’s really going on

You already do your job well. The exhaustion starts when you try to control what other departments decide, not just your own part. That control is not yours. Choose one clear ask per person, send it, set a deadline, then let their choice be theirs.

A moveList the three people or departments who slow you down most. Write one sentence for each: what you need, by when.
A moveSend one direct ask to each today. State the decision or action you need — not a vague check-in.
A moveSet a firm deadline for each ask. When it passes, follow up once, then stop chasing.
A moveEach evening, write down what you controlled well. Ignore what others delayed — that was never yours to control.
A moveBefore every cross-department meeting, decide what you will walk away with. Do not wait for others to promise what you want.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You send clearer, shorter requests instead of vague check-ins.
  • You waste less energy chasing replies that are not yours to control.
  • You know within a day whether to escalate or simply wait.
  • Your frustration drops because you stop blaming yourself for other people's delays.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
