You wake in the night and scroll instead of sleeping

You wake in the small hours and reach for the phone, and what should have been a brief return to sleep becomes an hour or more of scrolling in the dark. The light and the feed wake you fully, your sleep is wrecked, and you face the next day exhausted, caught in a habit that steals your nights.

What’s really going on

This habit quietly wrecks your rest, and it eases plainly. The light and the stream keep sleep away — when you wake and reach for the phone, the bright light tells your body it is day and the engaging feed rouses your mind, so a brief stir becomes an hour of alertness because you have done the very things that banish sleep. Keep the device out of the night entirely — let it rest in another room or well across this one, so waking does not place the glowing temptation in your hand, since what is not at hand cannot pull you, and this small arrangement does what resolve at three in the morning cannot. And let waking in the night be met with rest, not stimulation — stay in the dark, let the body be still and the mind drift unfed, trusting sleep to return as it does when not chased away. Let the night remain the night. Where does your phone rest when you sleep?
