Your teenager is dating someone you don't trust

You do not like who your teen is seeing. Something about them worries you — and every time you say a word, your teen defends them harder and pulls further away. You are scared, and you are watching your influence shrink just when you feel they need it most.

What’s really going on

This is one of the hardest tightropes in parenting a teen — real concern on one side, and the certainty that pushing will only push them together on the other. The wisdom here is restraint: forbidding usually backfires, curiosity keeps you close, and you save your firm voice for real danger, not mere dislike. The values you raised them with are still in there. Your job is to stay someone they will actually talk to.
