You're always code-switching and you've lost yourself in it
You become a different person for every room — one way at work, another at home, another among your own people, another in the wider world — constantly switching how you speak, act, and present. You have done it so long that you have lost track of who you actually are beneath all the versions, and you feel like you have no true self left.
I wore many faces to move through a world that would not accept my one, so I know this weariness and this danger. The switching began as a skill, not a betrayal — you learned to become different selves out of necessity, an intelligent survival in a world that punishes those who cannot adapt, often the price of access to places that would have shut you out, so honor it rather than condemn it as fakery; the trouble is only that you switched so long you lost the thread beneath. There must be a self beneath the switching — a core of values and identity that does not change with the room, carried into every version and never surrendered, so the switching is only a change of language, not of soul. And have places where you never switch at all — friends, home, community where the full unswitched you is welcome and restored. Keep your unswitched places, and return often.
