You're ashamed of where you come from

You are ashamed of your origins — your background, your family, your class, your people, the place you come from — and you hide it, downplay it, distance yourself from it, wishing you came from somewhere more respectable. The shame follows you, and you carry a quiet self-contempt for the roots you cannot change and feel you must apologize for.

What’s really going on

This shame deserves examination, for it is heavier and less true than it feels. The shame was taught to you; it is not native — you learned it from a world that ranked your background low, a judgment imposed by those who benefit from the ranking and taken into yourself, so it is a colonized feeling, and to carry it is to do the work of your own diminishment for those who would diminish you. What you were taught to despise often holds real worth — look again with your own eyes and you will find strength, beauty, and wisdom where contempt blinded you to see only lack, for what you were told to despise is frequently what you should most prize, seen truly. And to honor your origins is to become whole — you cannot be whole while at war with your own roots, so turn toward them with honor, claiming them, even while critiquing what deserves it. Claim your roots, and become whole. What about where you come from do you most hide?
